Types of Sedation offered at Chisholm Trail Dental & Orthodontics

Nitrous Oxide Sedation – This is most commonly known as laughing gas, which is administered via a nasal mask during treatment. Patients that undergo nitrous oxide sedation feel very relaxed during their visit, but are completely awake during treatment. Once treatment is complete, the nasal mask is removed, and the effects of nitrous wear off almost immediately. Patients that undergo this type of sedation are able to drive home and resume normal activates.

Oral Conscious Sedation – This is a stronger form of sedation and is given in pill form. Patients take this pill (usually Halcion or a similar medicine) prior to coming in for their dental appointment. With oral sedation, phobic patients feel at ease during their treatment, and the effect usually dissipate within 24 hours. Oral sedation patients cannot drive, so it is best to have a friend or family member drive you home the day of your treatment.

IV Sedation – This type of sedation is for patients that have a strong fear or phobia of the dentist. With IV Sedation, patients are in a deep, almost dreamlike state during their visit. This is a wonderful type of sedation for patients that have intense fear of the dentist, or patients that need years’ worth of dental work completed in one visit. Patients that have this type of sedation remember little to nothing of their visit.

Our office is a member office of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. We have treated hundreds of patients with this safe and approved technique.
